Defining Biodiversity
My Definition of Biodiversity
To me, biodiversity means the different amounts of living creatures or organisms that are found in various places in the world.
I obtained this definition from browsing different sites but these two sites (cited below) had the most influence:
National Geographic. (n.d.). Biodiversity. Retrieved from https://education.nationalgeographic.org/resource/biodiversity
American Museum of Natural History. (n.d.). What is biodiversity? Retrieved from https://www.amnh.org/research/center-for-biodiversity-conservation/what-is-biodiversity
Biodiversity is extremely important at all levels. Having a variety of species, especially plants, in an ecosystem protects it from disease, changes in environmental conditions, and makes the system unique. These systems provide a variety of ecosystem services, such as exchanging carbon dioxide for oxygen and cleaning water, which the human species are dependent upon. Biodiversity keeps the planet living.
